Teller Sheriff Thinks Arsonist Set “Several” Fires
The Teller County Sheriff’s Office thinks someone’s setting fires in the county.
Detective Mike Romero says they’re in the middle of “an active arson investigation into several fires.”
He won’t confirm exactly which fires, but does say they are currently interviewing people about them and they’re urging anyone with information that could help the investigation to call him at 719-687-9652.
The most recent fire in Teller County was the Navajo fire. It burned south of the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and was set 9 years to the day that the Hayman fire started. Several wildfires have sparked in the same area since 2010.
The Navajo forced the evacuation of 100 homes. One of the evacuees told us she’s surprised, and a little upset, someone may be starting fires out there.
“What would I tell that person? I would ask them to go get help,” Mary Whitt told us, “everybody up here works hard, it’s our life savings into our homes.”
