UPDATE: Chase Ends In Crash, 2 Hospitalized
The El Paso County Sheriff’s office said a nasty wreck near the airport was caused by a man who stole a car, sped away from deputies and crashed while under the influence.
An EPCSO spokesperson said the man who caused the crash is 29-year-old Garrett Riddle. He said Riddle and the 50-year-old driver of the pick up truck he hit are still in the hospital, but expected to be okay.
Authorities said they were responding to a 911 domestic violence call at a home on Lindstrom Drive in Security-Widefield. When they arrived, they said Riddle was in the driveway of the home sitting in a blue PT Cruiser. They said when they asked Riddle to get out of the car, he sped away.
Deputies said they pursued Riddle as he ran through red lights and reached speeds of 80 m.p.h. They said they ended the chase just seconds before Riddle crashed at the intersection of Powers and Milton Proby.
Riddle’s ex-girlfriend told KRDO Newschannel 13 that the PT Cruiser was her car, and that Riddle assaulted her and tried to force her and her 3-year-old daughter into the vehicle.
The EPCSO said Riddle is facing charges of Domestic Violence/Third Degree Assault, Harassment, Motor Vehicle Theft, DUI, Vehicular Eluding and Vehicular Assault. It said Riddle also has an outstanding Domestic Violence/Harassment summons to be served out of the Sheriff’s Office and a misdemeanor drug warrant.
