Pregnant Calhan Woman Killed In Crash

A Calhan woman pregnant with twins was killed and three children were hurt in a car crash in Eastern El Paso County.

The crash happened Saturday around 6 p.m. on Harrisville Road just east of Highway 24.

Colorado State Patrol said Amy Banes was driving her 1997 Chevy Blazer East on Harrisville Road when the SUV went off the right side of the road. Investigators said Banes overcorrected, and the SUV went off the left side of the road into a fence.

Banes was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from the SUV. She was taken to a local hospital where she died. Friends said Banes was pregnant with twins, and the babies died as well.

An 11-year-old and 8-year-old child were also ejected from the SUV, officials said. A 5-year-old was wearing a seat belt and was not ejected. All three children hurt in the crash and were taken to the hospital. State patrol said all three children are expected to survive the crash. The relationship between Banes and the children was not known.

Investigators were still looking into the cause of the crash. Authorities said alcohol and drugs were not suspected to be factors in the crash. They are still trying to figure out if Banes was speeding.
