KRDO Wins 6 Murrow Awards, Including ‘Overall Excellence’

The Radio Television Digital News Association Thursday announced the 2011 regional winners of the Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in electronic journalism.

KRDO-TV in Colorado Springs picked up six awards, more than any other TV station in southern Colorado. KRDO competed against fellow stations in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming for the award.

KRDO-TV won ‘Overall Excellence’in the regional Murrow award contest in the small market TV category.

“We are very proud of our awards and especially the ‘Overall Excellence’ in the newscast category. To be recognized by our peers in quality journalism humbles us,” said Michael Sipes, news director for KRDO-TV.

Heavenly Hugs won “Video Feature Reporting” and 10 Minutes to MMJ won “Video Investigative Reporting.”

The “Video Newscast” award went to a 10 o’clock newscast on the arrests in the Monument Child Mystery.

KRDO photographers and editors also won a Murrow for “Use Of Video” in a story on our former assignment editor, Scott Orr, called, “Scott’s Story: Second Time Around.”

Finally, KRDO-TV won a Murrow for “Video Continuing Coverage” for a special on Breast Cancer, ‘Faces Of Pain, Faces of Hope’

Regional winners automatically become eligible for the national awards competition, which will be judged in June.

The national Edward R. Murrow Awards will be presented this October at the RTDNA Awards Dinner in New York City.
