Republicans Meet At The County Assembly Today
COLORADO SPRINGS – Around 1,800 delegates gathered at UCCS to cast their votes for state and county elected officials. A closely watched race for El Paso County is for Sheriff. Incumbent Terry Maketa is running for his last term, and newcomer Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk is throwing his hat in the race.
Shirk said, “it was time to step forward for me to run I have different ideas, different ideas that need to happen here in the sheriff’s office.”
Maketa said, “I’ve got a great campaign team they really pulled together when I decided to run. You can feel the energy in there, we feel real good about today’s vote we know we’re sitting strong and we’ll just continue to build on that.”
Sheriff Maketa pledged to continue his fight to control the jail population and he’ll focus on adding more patrol. Maketa said, “try to find the resources to get more deputies on the road, but we’re doing great with volunteers they’re stepping in and we’ve not had to reduce services.”
Shirk said, “the first thing we need to tackle is to increase street patrols by 20 percent within 18 months. We need more deputies on the street at no cost.”
At the assembly, 500 delegates and alternates were confirmed to attend the State Assembly. State Assembly delegates will decide which gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidates will be on the November ballot.
The State Assembly will be held on May 22nd.
