Pigs In Colorado Springs Fall Victim To Attacks

Anders Nelsona.nelson@krdo.com

COLORADO SPRINGS – In the past week pigs on the Ventetucci Farm have been attacked on two different occasions. The attackers are not wild animals. The attackers are humans.

T-posts that make up the fence to protect the pigs are the weapons that are being used against them. Now the pigs do not even trust their caregivers.

Susan Gordon is one of the property managers at Ventetucci Farm she said, “they typically run up to us when we come expecting to be feed, but now they are keeping their distance, so the relationship that we have been able to develop with them has been damaged as well.”

Two pigs have been attacked but the bigger one of the two was able to get away by breaking through the fence. The pig that did not get away suffered a broken jaw and massive cut on her back from an attack on March 31st.

On Monday she was attacked again. She had her legs tied up and the pig is still having trouble walking.

Susan said, “I see this as a great opportunity for some restorative justice, I would really like the people who did this to be found and I would like to be able to put them to work on the farm.”

If the pig is unable to recover from her wounds she will not be able to be breed as their lead Sow.

Susan has had offers from neighbors to help them watch the pigs at night to make sure that nothing like this happens again. At this point the Ventetucci Farm is not sure if they will be able to leave any of there animals in the pasture overnight.

If you have any information regarding the attacks on the pigs you are asked to call the El Paso County Sheriffs Department at 390-5555.
