Drivers Encouraged To Renew Licenses Online

By Laurie Ciprianol.cipriano@krdo.com

COLORADO SPRINGS – The days of standing in line at the DMV to renew a driver’s license may be over. The Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging drivers to renew their licenses online, if the meet certain criteria.

“We’re dealing right now with about 23 percent less budget than we had three years ago,” said El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Robert Balink. “That’s huge.”

Budgets are tight everywhere. With more than 2.5 million Coloradans needing to renew their driver’s licenses over the next three years, the DMV is encouraging online renewals. “It’s not a bad idea to do it online if you don’t want to come to the office,” said Balink. It’s also a good way to avoid the typical DMV long lines.

According to Balink, the online process is pretty simple. “You have your renewal card right in front of you, and then you’ll take your vehicle identification number or your plate number, pull up the data and then you decide how you want to pay for it.”

The online process also allows drivers to register as an organ and tissue donor at the same time. As of April 2009, Colorado is ranked first in the nation with a 65% donor designation rate.
