PUEBLO – A rally and march took place today on the steps of the Pueblo County Courthouse to honor Cesar Chavez a man who spent his life fighting against injustices.
Many people showed up on this State holiday because they remembered him when he stated his fight for migrant workers. Dan Sandoval is with the American GI Forum, he told stories about his marches with Chavez to change how workers were treated. “We all marched, we all rallied, Cesar joined us, Cesar and some of his group joined us and the results of this rally we had, the justice department came in and changed the structure of the local law enforcement agency.”
The event is going to become an annual event. Tom Duran is the State Director of LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) says its important not to forget. “We are trying to honor Cesar Chavez and the work that he did for the migrant farm workers, improving working conditions and of course honoring the man he was and the manor in which he conducted himself in a non-violent manor.”
One of the non-violent ways that Chavez fought injustice was through fasting. At one point he did not eat for 25 days, he waited to eat until things started to change for the workers.
The supporters of the event hope that they can make this into a Gala event with a dance and golf tournament to raise money to give scholarships to children of migrant workers so that they can go to college and get a quality education.
