SOUTHERN COLORADO – The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for most of Southeastern Colorado today. The warning went into effect at 11am and remains in effect until 8pm tonight.

Temperatures in Southern Colorado reached near record highs today. A Red Flag Warning means that there are warm temperatures, gusty winds and low relative humidity,as a result the risk ofwildfires goup. The warning is something that firefighters appreciate.

“It just gives us heightened awareness that we might have to act on a wildfire today, it just gives us a heads up that there is a potential out there for a wildfire within the city limits or within the perimeter of Colorado Springs,” according to Lt. Michael Archuleta who is with CSFD Station 4.

One thing that is important to remember, when conditions are as dry as they are the smallest spark could set off a major wildfire. “With a wildfire its very unpredictable due to the fire behavior, the weather, topographies and the fuels, it could also spread quickly, so you have a bigger area of concern with a wildfire.”
