Phony Bill Collectors Warning

COLORADO – The state Attorney General’s office says it is seeing a spike in the number of fraudulent debt collectors.

The calls for money are being made from unknown phone numbers or showing up in the caller ID as all zeros. Phony bill collectors are using economic instability to scare you into paying unspecified bills immediately.

The Better Business Bureau says always double check the information against your own records and do a background check on the company asking for money.

“Lets say your really do owe the debt they are legitimate you still have every right to get their information and check them out and see if they’re legitimate,” said Katie Carrol of the Better Business Bureau.

Your right as a consumer includes having time to pay that bill.

If you feel like you’ve been contacted by a fraudulent bill collector call the Attorney General’s hotline at 1-800-222-4444.
