Explosive Detection Systems Go In At Colorado Springs Airport

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado Springs Airport is preparing for new explosive detection equipment for baggage.

The airport has been working for about a year to upgrade the checked baggage inspection system. According to information provided by the Colorado Springs Airport, the automated system will greatly increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the checked baggage screening process. The system will also allow luggage to be screened without having to be opened, allowing greater privacy for passengers. Only bags that are identified by the system as posing a potential security threat would be opened for inspection by a security repetitive.

The installation of this system will mean some changes for passengers checking luggage. To make room for the new equipment the TSA will relocate the baggage screening process to the ticket lobby. This will be in place for about 18 months while construction is under way. These temporary inspection stations will be installed this week and be in service on Monday, April 5th.

The total cost could be over $20-milliondivided betweenthe airport and the TSA.Theairport portion of the funding is generated through airport and passenger fees.
