‘Bus’ Bergman Dies At 89
DENVER (AP) – Prominent Coloradan Walter “Bus” Bergman has died at age 89.
The Grand Junction man died Sunday. His son, Walt Jr., says funeral arrangements are pending.
Bergman was a decorated veteran of World War II who also figured prominently in the state both as an athlete and as a coach.
He was a three-sport star at Denver’s North High School and a key halfback at Colorado A&M, later renamed Colorado State University.
He coached both baseball and football at Mesa State College and the athletic fields there are named in his honor.
As a Marine major during World War II, Bergman received the Bronze Star for heroism during battles at Okinawa and Sugar Loaf Hill.
He is survived by his son and two daughters, Judy Black of Alexandria, Va., and Jane Norton of Denver, a former Colorado lieutenant governor.
