Club Syn Sues City

By Lindsay Watts

COLORADO SPRINGS-The city of Colorado Springs is facing a lawsuit that could be for millions of dollars. The owners of Club Syn are suing after they say their liquor license was unfairly revoked. Club Syn lost its license after a fight at the bar earlier this month that police say involved about a hundred people.

“If you have people being shot at other establishments, and they still have their liquor licenses and yet there’s a fistfight that transpires at my bar, and I don’t have my liquor license, the thought of impropriety has to come to mind,” says co-owner Scott Collman, who points to recent shootings and violence outside other city bars.

He says the double standard is one reason why he’s taking the case to court.

“If it was just us, I’d get it,I would understand,” says Collman.”I would put up the white flag and say, you know what, you’re right. But it’s not just us.”

He says there’s no price tag on the lawsuit yet, but that it could be for millions in damages. He says Syn was a$3 million business, and now he and his partner are facing bankruptcy on the former hot spot as it sits empty.

A district judge says he’ll rule on the suit in the next few months.

“Ifhe decides against us, of coarse there are other levels of appeals we’ll be taking,” says Collman.

In March of 2009 the club, then known as 13 Pure, was hit with a 10-day suspension of its liquor licenseafter theColorado Springs’ Liquor Licensing Board found that it violated the conduct of an establishment during a Girl’s Gone Wild event. The club owners could be facing even more penalties Friday when they have to go back in front of the liquor board on charges that they served alcohol to three minors.

The club’s owners have given up on trying to get their liquor license back, so it seems there’s no chance that Syn will re-open. The building is now on sale for over 2 million dollars.
