Preparations For Fast And Furious Snow
By Lindsay Watts
MONUMENT- The snow came in fast and furious Tuesday. At 6pm the roads were dry and the sky was clear, but by 7 it was a different story.
“We were at work and all of a sudden it came out of nowhere. In 5 minutes, it was packed snow on the ground,” says Steven Perret, who stopped to get gas in Monument. “I heard it was going to snow a little, but not this much.”
Road crews in Southern Colorado were prepared for the wintry blast. El Paso County had crews on standby before a flake ever touched the ground. They had 33 trucks ready by 5:00pm, as well as 22 motor graters to clear dirt roads if more than half a foot accumulates. Colorado Springs is on full call out with 45 trucks, and Pueblo and Teller Counties say they will have all their snow plows out by early Wednesday.
Meanwhile El Paso County Search and Rescue workers also prepared for the onslaught of snow. They’re issuing a warning to those who choose to travel on Pikes Peak, or along Rampart Range Rd., saying if you end up in need of rescue, you could be looking at an 8-12 hour wait
