‘Grandma’ Scam Happening In Southern Colorado

Colorado Springs- Since March 1st, there have been at least four case reports taken by El Paso County Sheriff’s officethat have involved a type of fraud often referred to as a “Grandma scam.”

The victims have each been contacted on the phone by suspects claiming to be their grandchildren and/or someone calling on behalf of the grandchild. The suspects tell the victims they have been in an accident and need money sent immediately, by wire transfer, to a location in Canada.

This is a commonly used scam that has occurred periodically for years across the United States. People are reminded to thoroughly investigate any claims or requests for money before sending funds, especially when the recipient may be in another country.
