By: Patti Moon

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Springs has one of the highest suicide rates for a city its size.A growing homeless population has many in the community worried about mental health problems.

That’s the focus of a 2-day training program. The Pikes Peak Behavioral Health Group wants more people to be ready to help individuals who suffer from mental illness.

Police officers, church leaders and aid agencies have all teamed up to learn more about mental health first aid. Clinicians say training could help save lives.

Health officials point out a stigma attached to mental illness. Community members say they often try to help, but don’t know how or who to turn to.

Clinicians say making a difference is easy. First, know your resources. Ask local agencies how to get informed. Then, be aware of your surroundings and help when you can.
