Update On Condition Of Dogs Taken From Calhan Home

By: Mireya Garcia

COLORADO SPRINGS- A woman from Calhan threatens a Sheriff’s Deputy with a gun after she realizes some of her dogs will be taken away from her.

Norma Scott, 72, the owner of the dogs, was arrested Friday and now faces charges of first-degree assault on a peace officer. At least 10 dogs were taken from the Scott’s home.

Dr. Wes Metzler, of the Humane Society Peaks Pike Region, says he believes there were 50 to 100 animals on the property including dogs, cats, rabbits, and farm animals. Metzler says that there were animals on the property that were in “ok condition”, that is why not all the animals were seized.

The dogs that are now in the Humane Society in Colorado Springs are mostly Yorkshire and small Poodle mixes. Many of them have already been shaved because their hair is extremely matted. Dr. Metzler says when a dog’s hair is in that kind of condition, animals can get skin infections.

Still, Metzler says he doesn’t believe that many people of the people in situations such as Scott’s start off thinking they will collect too many animals.

“These things mushroom and then people begin to not see that their hair is badly matted or that there is fecal material sticking to their hair.”

The seized pups will not be up for adoption any time soon, if at all. That’s because this is an ongoing investigation. Scott has the option of paying for the dogs’ bond, then a judge will decide if the dogs will go back to the owner or if they will go up for adoption. The owner can also sign the dogs over to the Humane Society before a trial.
