Springs’ Mission Of Mercy Sending Help To Haiti After 7.0 Earthquake

COLORADO SPRINGS – Christian child development organization Mission of Mercy is assessing the damage after a massive, 7.0 magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 12th.

Communication with staff in Haiti has been more difficult, as phone lines were down and roadways blocked with debris. Early this morning, Mission of Mercy’s director for Haiti and the Dominican Republic finally spoke with staff in northern Haiti, almost 80 miles from the quake’s epicenter. The staff there reported little damage, but expressed concern for their fellow Haitians in Port-au-Prince.

“[Our staff] felt very strong tremors,” Wellington Clemente, country director of both Haiti and Dominican Republic projects said, “but Port-au-Prince is a real disaster.”

Mission of Mercy has established a relief fund to assist the victims of the earthquake. To give, call (800)864-0200, or go to www.missionofmercy.org/Haiti to donate online or for up-to-date information.

Mission of Mercy operates 14 projects in Haiti, most located in the northern half of the country.
