COLORADO SPRINGS – A 72-year old Calhan woman was charged with first-degree assault on a peace officer and obstructing a peace officer, after pointing a gun at a deputy sheriff on Friday.

Norma Scott spoke exclusively with Newschannel 13. She told us that it’s all a blur now. She knows what she did was wrong and that she regrets pulling out her rifle, but she just didn’t want her dogs taken away.

“I went berserk,” said Norma Scott. “I went crazy. You know how you do. And I would have never done that to anybody else.”

“My sister, she was to the point of no return,” said Susan Scott. “She got a gun.” She pointed that gun directly at a deputy sheriff.

“She chased him around out here with the gun a little bit,” said Susan. “And she didn’t fire.”

“You just don’t think,” said Norma. “And I didn’t think.”

An El Paso County deputy sheriffwent on tothe Scott property because he received a complaint about a dog that had severe injuries.

“There is a report that they had a dog that we owned that was badly injured and died later,” said Susan. “That dog was out on the road and I picked it up off the road.” She said the dog was missing one leg and was in bad shape.

The deputy sheriff searched the Calhan property, where sisters Norma and Susan live with their family, which includes lots of dogs. At one point there were as many as 35 dogs.

“We took care of them,” said Norma. When the deputy sheriff told the women he was going to call the humane society, Norma said, “We lost it. We all got flustered.”

“We didn’t want them to take the dogs out of the house,” said Susan.

That’s when Norma got her gun. “And the instant I got it, I mean he was gone,” said Norma. “He was gone like a bullet when he saw the gun.” The rifle was confiscated and Norma was arrested.

“It’s absolutely not okay to point a firearm at a police officer,” said Teresa Murphy, with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. “They’re going to be afraid for their live. Our deputy used great restraint in not firing upon this woman when she pointed a long rifle at him.”

Ten dogs were removed from the property. “I love them very much,” said Susan. “And they took them and they won’t let me have them back.”

Fourteen dogs remain on the property. Norma and Susan say they are going to do everything they can to keep the dogs they have left.

Norma Scott was released on $25,000 bail.
