COLORADO SPRINGS- In just two days the Mountain Post lost two of its own in Afghanistan. On October 24th PFC Devin Michel was killed, then on the 25th,Sgt. Eduviges Wolf. On Wednesday morning dozens of people gathered for a memorial service at Fort Carson to honor thefallen heroes.
“You saw by the crowds that showed up to remember these soldiers, we really do take it personally,” says Maj. Daniel Chandler. “Every loss that the military takes is felt by everybody.”
PFC Michel was just 19 years old. Fellow soldiers call him a “rock,” always cool and calm. He passed up a basketball scholarship to college to join the army after high school. He was killed when an I.E.D. hit his vehicle.
Sgt. Wolf, 24, had two young daughters. Those with her the day she died say she volunteered to go on a risky mission to get fuel. She was killed by a rocket propelled grenade. Her husband Sgt. Joshua Wolf is also a Fort Carson soldier deployed to Afghanistan. He attended the ceremony, along with Michel’s wife Anika. They joined many men and woman in uniform, coming together to mourn.
“The army and in the military in general, it’s a very tight-knit community,” says Maj. Chandler.”We support each other and that’s one of the ways we get through tragic events like this.”
