D-49 Rally For School Board Recall Saturday
COLORADO SPRINGS – Parents in Falcon District 49 came togetherSaturday to rally for a recall of two of its school board members. About two-dozen volunteers hit the streets togather signatures for two petitions.
The group needs 3,500 signatures for both Dave Martin and Kent Clawson. The group has until July 7–a period of 60 days–to collect those signatures. Volunteers believe they will probably exceed that number. Martin and Clawson are the only two board members whose terms do not expire this year. Group leaders say they’ll seek and support candidates for the three remaining board seats.
The effort stems from a situationearlier this yearwhen the school boardnearly let the contracts of Mike and Sandy Collins–two popular principals who are husband and wife–lapse. The principals have widespread community support.
The rally took place at the Stetson Hills police substation on Tutt Boulevard. Parents met for an hour before heading out to get signatures. Some parents express frustration with the board, saying it ignores their concerns and opinions. The district currently is searching for a new superintendent, and has had several in recent years.
NEWSCHANNEL 13 spoke with one of the two embattled school board members earlier this week. Dave Martin says he can’t please everyone, and his focus will not be on the recall. Martin says he’s focusing on his duties as a school board member instead.
