Controversial Abortion Doctor Killed

COLORADO SPRINGS – A long-term abortion doctor from Wichita, Kansas was shot and killed while serving as an usher at church Sunday morning. Dr. George Tiller had been targeted before. Police say suspect was arrested a few hours later in Kansas City. They believe he acted alone.

Many are shocked, pro-lifers worry tonight that they may be viewed as extremist after the shooting. The doctor was the source of much controversy, Dr. Tiller survived another shooting in the 90’s and the bombing of his clinic in the 80’s.

Local pro-life author and minister Becca Greenwood says, “my heart is grieved for his family, I am very sad for his wife and his children. They are definitely in our prayers.”

Tiller attended a Lutheran church in Wichita and served as an usher there. His tragic death sends ripples across the nation. Doctor Tiller was known to perform abortions after five months of pregnancy making him one of 3 doctors in the nation to do so, and perhaps one of the most controversial doctors in the country.

Greenwood says, “this is not the way to fight abortion we pray, we ask the lord to release righteousness…I have been involved in a prayer group where we have been praying for tiller and his family and we have asked the lord to touch them and move in their lives.”

Many pro-lifers worry they could be viewed as extremist after the shooting. Greenwood says, “we need to vote based on our belief’s we need to allow our voice to be heard at the state level in government and also the national level in government but fighting…..with murder and violence is not the way to handle this.”

Dr. Tiller was obviously singled out in the shooting, as witnesses say the gunman walked up to Tiller and shot him at close range and left moments later. Greenwood says, “we never can take the law into our own hands….this is not the heartbeat of those that are pro-life.”

Planned Parenthood sent us this statement:

“We are deeply saddened by the murder of Dr. George Tiller. While he was not a Planned Parenthood provider, he was an integral part of the women’s health community and his loss is felt by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and others close to him including his dedicated and courageous staff. His death is an enormous loss for the patients who relied on him, the medical community and for women and their families across America.”
