‘Dog The Bounty Hunter’ Says He Was Shot At In Colo. Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS – Duane “Dog” Chapman–also known as “Dog the Bounty Hunter” caught a wanted man Wednesday morning who fled from the Forest Hills Apartments near Citadel Mall.
The real-life bounty hunter made the capture hours after apparently being shot at by the man he was trying to track down and arrest.Chapmanfinally caught Hoang Nguyen at 1:30 a.m. at the Toys ‘R Us on Galley Road, not far from where the shots were fired at 7:15 p.m.
Chapman and his team were armed with pepper spray guns–not paintball guns as first reported–and did fire back at Nguyen when the gunfire began at the apartments on Uintah Street. Nguyen briefly escaped on a motorcycle. Originally it wasreported by police that Chapman and his team were carrying machine guns, but thatwas not true.
Apartment residents were divided about whether the incident was more of a potential danger to them, or a greater thrill to meet their hero who posed for pictures and signed autographs after the incident, and also apologized for frightening some neighbors.
“He was shooting, and it looked like he hit my car,” said resident Trae Coleman of the bounty hunter. “I looked at him like, that’s Dog! I ran to my brother’s house next door, and said Dog is out there shooting some guy. We all saw him. It was Dog and his wife. In all the excitement, I was just freaking out.”
Neighbor Deborah Verduft added: “I’ve got an autistic son who doesn’t know any better than that. For all he knows,(Nguyen) isjust someone else in the community. I’m very concerned.” Yet at the same time, she described the incident as “kind of neat.”
NEWSCHANNEL 13 has learned the 35-year-oldsuspect was wanted for failing to appear in court on a domestic violence charge.Nguyen may also be charged with attempted murder and a gun charge, for shooting at Dog and his team. Local bondsman Bobby Brown was involved in the capture.
The reality star and his crew usually work independently of police. However, police were on the scene to file a report on the incident. One ofChapman’s most famous captures was of the heir to the Max Factor cosmetics company, who had fled to Mexico after being accused and convicted of rape in 2003. Chapman’s reality show then began airing in 2004, after achieving the seemingly impossible, and infamous, takedown.
