City Approves $53 Million Partnership To Keep USOC
COLORADO SPRINGS – The results are in froma special session Monday afternoon. Colorado Springs City Council members voted, 7 to 1,to approve an incentive package in an effort to keep the USOC from moving out of the city.
The approved proposal will give the USOC a new headquarters building, renovations to an existing building and 158 new housing units for athletes at the Olympic Training Center.
Senator Ken Salazar hailed the USOC for staying, saying “I have long said that Colorado Springs is good for the Olympic Committee headquarters and the Olympic Committee headquarters is good for Colorado Springs. The USOC has been and will continue to be a huge economic driver for the Pikes Peak region. Colorado Springs has an attractive economy that can easily anchor the various sporting associations revolving around the USOC’s headquarters. It will continue to make a great home for the USOC for decades to come.”
The Colorado Springs City Councilbeganto consider approvingthe $53 million deal aimed at keeping the U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters in the city earlier last week.
The USOC, a fixture in Colorado Springs for nearly 30 years, was considering various proposals to relocate from its aging facilities.
