Woman, Baby Die Near Hospital

Dan Dozar

COLORADO SPRINGS- An expectant mother and her unborn child are dead after a one-vehicle crash in Colorado Springs.

It happened just after 2:30 Wednesday morning in front of the Olympic Training Center, at Boulder and Union.

Colorado Springs Police investigators say a 26-year-old male was driving his wife to the hospital when the vehicle ran off the right side of the road.

Sgt. Rob Kelley with CSPD tells NEWSCHANNEL 13 the woman slumpedover in the car, and the husband reached over to help her, when he crashed into a tree.

The 26-year-old woman was pronounced dead on scene. Emergency responders rushed her to Memorial Hospital, just a block away, and tried to save her baby. But it died at birth.

The husband was also transported to Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors involved in the crash at this time. Charges will be determined pending further investigation.
