Rally Backs Tuition Break For Illegal Immigrants

DENVER (AP) – Supporters of a bill allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state college tuition are heading to the state Capitol for a rally.

They plan to rally Monday on the West Steps and then talk to lawmakers. Supporters include Latino groups, the Colorado Progressive Coalition and the Service Employees International Union.

Last week, they picked up the backing of Gov. Bill Ritter. Ritter says the bill will help build a well-educated work force and strengthen the economy.

Debate on the bill in the state Senate has been delayed because opponents want to make sure it won’t cost the state any money.

Fiscal analysts don’t expect it to because students who are here illegally wouldn’t get a state subsidy like other Colorado students.
