Green Beret From Littleton Dies During Underwater Training

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) – The Army says it is investigating the death of a North Carolina-based Green Beret who died during training in Key West, Fla.

The military said in a statement that 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Mark M. Maierson of Littleton, Colo., died Friday. Army officials said he lost consciousness while training in a swimming pool at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School.

Maierson joined the Army in Sept. 2003 as a Special Forces trainee. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg as an engineer.

He is survived by his parents, Rose and Mark Maierson of Littleton, Colo.
