New Cascade Hydro Plant Brings Renewable Energy To Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS- President Barack Obama wants to double the country’s renewable energy in just three years. And now, Colorado Springs is following suit.

Colorado Springs Utilities is leading the pack when it comes to hydroelectric power plants. On Tuesday,Mayor Lionel Riverabroke ground on the Cascade Hydro Plant. It’s the fourth of it’s kind in the city and it’s expected to generate power for nearly 600 homes.

Utility manager Brent richardson said, “It’s energy that doesn’t use any fossil fuels to generate and it is using the power of water coming from the mountains going to the water treatment plants.”

The newest hydro-plant will take six months to build and is being financed with federal Clean Renewable Energy Bonds, saving the city millions of dollars on behalf of it’s customers.
