Jailed Man Faces New Murder Charge

BOULDER – An inmate facing a 72-year prison term for rape is expected to be charged this week for a 1993 homicide prosecutors say is linked to him through DNA evidence.

Prosecutors say they’re planning to charge 47-year-old Rudy Gaytan on Wednesday with charges of first-degree murder and sexual assault for the death of Tammera Tatum.

Police say the 30-year-old woman was strangled in her Longmont apartment.

Gaytan was serving his prison sentence at the Limon Correctional Facility but was transferred Friday to the Boulder County Jail for the new case.

Gaytan was convicted in 2007 of raping a 19-year-old woman in 1996.

Prosecutors say Gaytan was also tied to that case through DNA evidence.
