PUEBLO – Pueblo Police tell NEWSCHANNEL 13 the death of City Cab driver David Chance was the result of an attempt to steal money that ended tragically.
David Chance, 51, was shot and killed in his cab while making a routine fare on the 1500 block of East 11th Street around 1:30 AM on October 30th.
The owner of City Cab, Chance’s employer, told NEWSCHANNEL 13 in November he believed the shooting was the result of a customer trying to skip out on their fare.
Police, however, say that isn’t the case and believe Chance’s deathisthe result of a well-planned crime involving at least six people and a getaway car.
“This was more than somebody trying to get a free ride,” Detective Don Litton of the Pueblo Police Department says.
Litton says police learned crucial information in their case within 24-hours of the shooting, when they found a stolen cell phone.
“Within just a few hours, we were able to start piecing together some names and some different things and one thing led to another.”
Detective Litton can’t remember a time he’s dealt with a similar case involving a cab driver. He says police are still looking into why the group was in need of money and what it may have been used for.
Pueblo Police continue to investigate the case, however, prosecuting it has now been turned over to the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office. Police tell NEWSCHANNEL 13 one of the suspects is related to an employee of the Pueblo D.A.’s office, which is why the El Paso County D.A. has stepped in.
City Cab drivers who knew Chance did not want to talk on camera or give their names, but one driver says losing his friend and colleague has made him think that much harder about who he picks up and where he takes them.
