Amanda Smith – Executive Producer

My television news career began in Colorado Springs. I started workinghere at NEWSCHANNEL 13 in 1997. I worked as an Assignment Editor/Associate Producer and was in charge of finding and assigning stories to reporters and photographers. A few months later, I was promoted to the evening producer and soon after that, I was promoted again to produce the 10:00 p.m. newscast. During that time, I covered many breaking news events like the Columbine High School shooting.

I grew in my career at NEWSCHANNEL 13 until 2000. It was then that I moved to Denver, where I spent 7 years working to better my producing skills in a large market. My experiences in Denver gave me the skills to help make NEWSCHANNEL 13 be the best station it can be. As the Executive Producer, I have the opportunity to share what I learned in a large market with everyone I work with.

Working as a producer, I oversee the entire newscast. Producers are in charge of putting the stories in order, assigning anchors to read the stories, writing the scripts the anchors read, approving reporter scripts, designing graphic elements and timing out the newscast. We truly are the gatekeepers of the news.

I graduated from Colorado State University in 1996 with a BA in Journalism & Technical Communications. In 2003, I received my Master’s in Communications Management from CSU.
