COLORADO SPRINGS- Kids playing on a school playground, only several feet away from a meth lab on Colorado Springs west side.
The lab was found at 101 Williams street, just across the street from Washington Elementary School.
While elementary school students watched, Hazmat crews emptied dangerous chemicals from the home.
Theresa Tuggle has a child who attends Washington. She wants to know why the school was never evacuated or put on lockdown.
“It just makes parents even more scared to their kids to go to school they start thinking about home school. I think they should have somehow notified parents or something.”
Hazmat crews spent hours on Wednesday ridding the house of potentially explosive chemicals.
Fifth grader, Cheyenne Breedlove often played with the dogs that lived inside the meth house.
“I was petting them one day I could smell it because it was coming off them. I’m like what’s that smell? I told my mom what it smelled like and she told me it was meth.”
This isn’t the first time Cheyenne has seen a meth lab bust in her neighborhood.
“There was another house up the street from me that they busted a year ago. They had all the swat here. This neighborhood was really really good and its becoming horrible,” says Breedlove.
Terry Martinez, principal of Washington Elementary School issued this statement:
“The school was in constant contact with C.S.P.D. during the event and we knew the school was the safest place for the children until we released them to the care of their parents and guardians at the normal dismissal time. We want to thank the Police and Firefighters for how they handled the situation and for keeping our children safe.”
Undercover Colorado Springs Detective Bob McDonald says the kids were in no real danger.
“It looks like the meth lab is just stored it’s not active. There is nothing that should endanger anybody in the immediate area.”
Police have not released the name of the suspects facing charges for the meth lab.
