Failed Issue May Close Schools

COLORADO SPRINGS – Several schools may be closing their doors in School District 11.

A mill levy for district 11 failed 57 to 43 Tuesday night. That bond issue would have enhanced teacher salaries.

Spokeswoman for district 11, Elaine Naleski, says she is disappointed. “We won’t be able to offer high salaries to teachers. We know we might lose teachers to districts that did pass.”

The Mill Levy would have also paid for several programs such as foreign language, arts, athletics, and tutoring programs. “Students will not get the enhanced curriculum such as foreign language at the elementary school level,” said Naleski.

District 11 is having a meeting at 6pm Wednesday night. Naleski says a consultant will make recommendations to the school board as to which schools should shut down.
