Wildfire Sparks In Douglas County
JEFFERSONCOUNTY – Firefighterscontinue to battlea 140 acre wildfireon theDouglas/Jefferson County linenear highway 67 north of Deckers.County Road67had to beclosed Sunday betweenOxyoke and Trumbull as a precaution. Several homes also had to be evacuated in the Oxyoke area.
Several structures have been threatened but none have been damaged by the fire. More than 200 firefighters are involved in containing the flames from multiple agencies.
The fire is burning through grass, Ponderosa pine and Oak brush in very rough, steep terrain. Road closures remain in effect in the Deckers, Sugar Creek and Nighthawk Hill areas. The Jefferson County Sheriffs Office will notify the public when the area has reopened.
Sunday night higher humidities and cooler temperatures helped in slowing the spread of the fire, however, warmer and dryer weather is predicted to return to the area on Tuesday with the potential to re-ignite smoldering hot spots. Investigators have not yet been able to determine the cause of the fire.
