Utility Bills On The Rise

By: Stacey Kaisers.kaiser@krdo.com

COLORADO SPRINGS – Imagine $30 more a month on your overall utility bill. It could become a reality. The latest Colorado Springs Utilities projection shows 2 separate utility increases that could happen; the first would impact things like watering your lawn and garden. A big part of water revenue comes form development, and development is down. “The house crunch has caused a significant slowdown in the number of homes being constructed in our area,” said Colorado Springs Utilities Sales Load Forecasting Supervisor Amy Cordova. A proposal has been made, and come September 1st, you might pay an average of $5 more a month for water. The second rate hike looks to affect all of your utility bills. “As customers are taking a look at other increases such as food, gasoline and other energy related items, it’s important to notice that as a utility we see an increase in those as well,” said Cordova. Because the costs of natural gas, coal and gasoline are up, Colorado Springs Utilities is projecting a $30 a month increase in your utility bills beginning April 1, 2009. The utilities board will make a final decision on the water hike August 12th. We will let you know what they decide. Click here for ways to conserve energy and save money on your bills.
