Spring Storm Catches Drivers Off Guard, Not City Street Workers
It’s been looking a bit more like Christmas than Easter on the roads.
Friday evening’s drive proved treacherous for many, with one fatality and many more spinouts and roll-overs.
The spring storm caught drivers off guard, but lucky for drivers, it didn’t catch city workers off guard.
“It’s not unusual, we’re pretty happy it’s not a heavy dump.” says supervisor Bill Moritz.
He says the spring snow’s enough to keep 24 people working 24 hours on the streets,
“We’re mostly taking care of the icy spots, the higher elevation bridge decks.”
Multiple cars and drivers succumbed by slipping and sliding in Friday’s commute.
Tragically one woman was ejected and later died after her jeep rolled on Platte Avenue. Police blame the mix of speed and icy conditions.
In weather like this, Moritz says you’ll find the highest danger in the highest places,
“Bridge decks are icy. Watch yourself on the bridge decks and concrete intersections. With a bridge deck it’s nothing but the ambient temperature that’s around you, the air temperature, if you will. So there’s nothing to keep the bridge warm underneath.”
