Former Pueblo County Sheriff’s deputy arrested on multiple felony charges

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- 13 Investigates has learned that a former Pueblo County Sheriff's deputy was arrested on Friday, July 15 on multiple felony warrants. 34-year-old Jose Rodriguez was employed by the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office until February, 2021.

Friday, Pueblo Police listed Rodriguez on their Safe Streets Criminal Round-up page. They said the former deputy was wanted on arrests warrants for two aggravated motor vehicle theft felonies and a trespassing charge. According to Pueblo Police, he had additional warrants for failure to appear in court.

Court records say Rodriguez pleaded guilty to trespassing in Huerfano County on August 8, 2021. He was given a deferred sentence of two years probation. Then, four months later was arrested in Pueblo County on new charges.

Rodriguez was arrested on aggravated motor vehicle theft charges on December 30, 2021. He posted a $3,500 bond that same day. Court documents say he stole a truck valued at $5,000 from a man on the east side of Pueblo.

Then, 15 days after being released on bond, Rodriguez is accused of committing another aggravated motor vehicle theft. This time, he is accused of stealing a truck valued at nearly $50,000 from a Chevrolet dealership off of Highway 50.

The truck was located at an Abba Eye Care two days later. An employee there identified the party in the truck as Jose Rodriguez. The officers that arrived on the scene mentioned that Rodriguez was a former deputy at the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

Rodriguez was arrested in March 2022 on that warrant and posted a $10,000 bond on March 17, 2022. He was scheduled to be in court on June 17, but court records indicate he failed to appear and Pueblo Police placed an additional warrant out for his arrest.

Pueblo Police located Rodriguez near the 1000 block of W 15th St. on July 15. There, Pueblo Police tell 13 Investigates Rodriguez fled from the home to escape being arrested. A foot chase ensued and he was placed under arrest.

He was booked in the Pueblo County Jail. Rodriguez will be back in court on July 21.

13 Investigates is still awaiting a response from the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office on why Rodriguez left in February 2021. At the time of publication, they are not able to provide any additional information.

13 Investigates reached out Rodriguez's defense attorney for comment. Ian King, a public defender, said, "I have no comment on clients with pending cases beyond that they 'are presumed innocent of their charges, which just so happens to be the bedrock of our criminal justice system," King said.

A new bond amount for Rodriguez has not yet been set. He will back in court on July 21.
