Colorado Springs Intersection sees a lot of speeding and crashes, residents speak out

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- At approximately 7:30 Sunday morning, a motorcyclist died in an intersection after colliding with a van.

Neighbors say speeding is a common occurrence at the intersection of Platte and Union.

"Every day it seems like motorcycles are going 90 to 100 miles an hour, and even some cars are going through this intersection," local resident Steve Babcock said.

Neighbors say they believe it's a combination of speeding on Platte and drivers not paying attention to the traffic lights.

"I just wish people would pay more attention to the traffic lights instead of being in a hurry all the time," Babcock said.

The intersection does have an active red light camera, but neighbors say it does not seem to make a difference.

"If I'm watching movies late I can see the camera lights flashing every 15 minutes," Babcock said. "So they're not paying attention to the cameras."

Residents wish there was a heavier police presence in the area to slow drivers down. But other than that, they are unclear on a solution.

"Its pretty dangerous here at this intersection," Babcock said. "They've been lucky they haven't had more."
