The Pueblo Central softball team are a close tight-knit bunch
At Pueblo Central these balloons are the equivalent of a welcome sign to the freshman class, "This is just the thoughtfulness of the girls, the senior girls," says Pueblo Central head coach Larry Romero, Lethicia Calderon added, "We really welcome our freshman because they are a big part of the team. They're are future." "I think that's why we bond so well because there's no cliques," says Central shortstop, Brooklyn Ruiz.
The seniors are the ones who put up the streamers and signs, they remember how this kind gesture put them at ease as freshman, "My heart melted, my heart melted. My mom had to drop me off early and everybody was so welcoming. It's so great knowing that you belong somewhere," says Central pitcher, Savannah Autobee, Marlo Castro added,"I remember those jitters. I remember the night before not being able to sleep wondering how everything was going to go but of course the girls made me feel welcome."
At Central they believe drama is for the stage not the softball diamond, "Drama affects a team it could either make it or break it. Here we cut it off right away we say we don't know you this is a fresh start, let's get to know each other. Let's get on each other's good side," says Autobee. Calderon adds, "We don't like drama. We're there for each other, even at school."
"Central is built off girls with no drama. We don't believe in that sort of thing and we create sort of family where we can chase after it," says Castro.
What this team plans to go and chase after is a state championship, "That's the plan. I mean that's what everyone wishes for right?," says Ruiz. "If we practice with the mindset of going to state and trying to win then it will happen. You got to think, say it, do it," says Autobee.
