WASHINGTON, D.C. (KRDO) -- The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and U.S. Navy Blue Angels will be joining forces in a series of multi-city flyovers throughout the next two weeks. That's according to a joint announcement Friday from the teams' respective military branches and the Department of Defense.

It's an initiative called America Strong. The DOD described it as "a collaborative salute" recognizing healthcare workers, first responders and other personnel who are essential during the coronavirus pandemic.

The two demonstration teams will fly over areas "hardest hit by COVID-19" starting next week, according to the release. The details of their flight itinerary have not yet been released as of Friday afternoon.

“We’re excited to fly over cities across America as our way of saying thanks to the healthcare workers, first responders, and all the people who selflessly run into the breach working to keep America strong,” said Gen. Dave Goldfein, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and Adm. Michael Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations, in the press release Friday.  “This is also our way of showing that we are all in this together and that America’s spirit will prevail.”

The release specified that both teams will be performing joint flyovers at some cities, while other cities may see one team or the other.
