Boulder PD: Man shot himself, ran from officers

Boulder police say a man who apparently shot himself in the head and then fled from officers was found after an all-night search aided by a television news helicopter.

Thirty-four-year-old Russell Daniels was found bloodied but alive Wednesday morning and taken to a hospital. This was after an all-night search that shut down major roadways.

Police went to check out a suspicious motorhome parked on a street Tuesday night and found out it was registered to Daniels, whom police say has an extensive criminal history and is wanted in an out-of-state drug case. They say Daniels refused to come out but a woman he had been ordered to stay away ran outside. Officers say Daniels fired four rounds before moving to the back of the motorhome out of sight.

Police say officers didn’t fire back and used their bodies to shield the woman as she escaped. They say an officer was allowed to fly in the chopper shared by Denver TV stations and communicated with SWAT teams on the ground.
