Security concerns cancel first day of classes at Colorado Springs charter school

James Irwin Charter School in Colorado Springs is closed due to a security risk. Campus officials say it will remain closed for the remainder of the day.

The school’s CEO says it received a rumor of a potential security issue Wednesday morning.

“There was some chatter that happened online, so we’re trying to sort through what that chatter is and what it means,” said Lt. Howard Black with the Colorado Springs Police department.

The school says it’s working with the Colorado Springs Police Department in the investigation.

“When we’re working with our schools it’s a very collaborative event. Obviously if it’s a criminal activity we play a little more role on safety issues and how we might suggest how to handle it,” Black said.

Parents living nearby the school worry and wonder.

“Yeah It’s pretty scary, I’d definitely leave them home for that day,” said Sheena Payan, a parent.

School officials notified parents of the security risk, but details of the exact threat are unclear. Police hope this will be a reminder for both parents and students to be aware when heading back to school.

“This isn’t just a police issue or a school issue, it’s a community issue and we all need to be engaged when hearing inappropriate conversations,” Black said.

According to the school’s website, today is the first day for new students. We tried contacting the charter school for comment, but haven’t heard back.
