Aurora man sentenced to probation after sixth DUI conviction

An Aurora man has been sentenced to probation for his sixth drunken driving conviction despite prosecutors calling for him to be jailed.

The Denver Post reports (http://dpo.st/2aR5uKm ) the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office says it asked for Doyle Carmack to be sentenced to four years of community corrections. Instead, the 54-year-old man was ordered to serve five years of probation.

District Attorney George Brauchler says a new Colorado DUI law lacks the promise of prison needed to ensure the safety of the community.

The 2015 law makes a fourth DUI a felony punishable by up to six years in prison.

Carmack pleaded guilty in the case after authorities say he was spotted driving erratically in Aurora and had a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit.
