Heavy but brief storms hit Southern Colorado
The Pikes Peak region did not see the major flooding that it had been bracing for Saturday, but that’s not to say residents did not experience a full spectrum of late summer storm activity.
The day started with temperatures in the 90s in Pueblo, but by 2:00 O’clock in the afternoon, heavy rain was sweeping over the area.
Later in the evening storm clouds thickened, bringing torrential rains to Colorado Springs, the eastern plains, and Crowley county.
Thankfully, the storm cells were fast moving. Upper level winds on the order of 15-20 miles per hour meant rain was heavy but brief for most areas.
In Teller county, gravel sized hail was reported over a large area; not enough to damage cars and roofs, but thick enough to cover the ground like snow in some spots.
Lightning was also a factor, leading to several fire department calls to homes that had been struck. Luckily, the storm did not spark any major structure fires.
