Tiny House Jamboree making big moves for sustainable living

Dozens of tiny homes are on display all weekend long at the Air Force Academy. It’s part of the annual Tiny House Jamboree that draws in people from around the state.

They’re small in size but making a big impact on sustainable living.

“There’s so many different kinds of tiny houses. I think the majority of our planning went into showcasing a variety which I think we really achieved. All the tiny houses are so unique,” said Cples Whalen, organizer.

From cottage style to rustic living nearly 50 tiny homes are on site.

Although small in size, the tiny homes provide the same amenities that a regular size home does. Inside you’ll find a kitchen, living room, bathroom and bedroom but all confined to a smaller space.

“This is the P-quad, it’s a 26 foot, 12,000 pound custom build. It’s got a curved roof and for a family of four,” said DanielPatterson, Rocky Mountain Tiny Houses.

Crowds lined up to get a glimpse of what could be reality.

“I’m considering buying one. I have a 3,200 square foot home right now and tired of keeping up and cleaning and doing yard work. I’m now an empty nester and going for the tiny home lifestyle,” said Stacia Jenson.

Many people say is the simplicity and low maintenance that attracts them to the idea.

“You don’t need more room, there’s no reason to live with a bunch of stuff. We’ve been down sizing for a long time,” said Margie Cleveland.

That’s why Margie and her sister made the decision and each bought their own tiny home.

“She’s going to have one and i’m going to have one, and we’re going to share a deck and call it the sisters,” Cleveland said.

The tiny movement is making big moves, expecting to draw in 30,000 people to southern Colorado.

The tiny house Jambroee runs on Sunday from 9 to 6 p.m. at the Air Force Academy campus. Tickets are $15 at the door and $5 for military. Kds 12 and under get in free.
