Colorado Springs couple gives birth to baby on highway, ties umbilical cord with shoe string

A Colorado Springs couple stationed in Hawaii gave birth to their newborn on the highway while they were driving to the hospital.

Samantha and Gilbert Solis were headed to the hospital with their two children and Gilbert’s brother Xavier Bosley when Samantha realized she was going to have the baby sooner than expected.

“I was proud of my wife. She did great giving birth in the car. I was the only one freaking out,” said Gilbert Solis.

She’d seen a video a few years ago on Facebook of a woman giving birth on the side of the road. She said she took what she remember from that and relied on her instincts.

“Moms, if it’s happening to them, just follow your instincts. They know what to do,” said Samantha.

“We are heading down the highway. And then I just hear a scream, a scream not from her, not from anyone in the car, from a new soul,” said Xavier Bosley.

Bosley took a shoelace off his sneakers and tied it around the umbilical cord. He said the experience felt like a dream.

“Hectic but staying calm at the same time,” said Xavier Bosley.

The couple is originally from Colorado Springs. Gilbert is in the Army and recently moved to serve at a station in Hawaii. Gilbert’s mother Elisa Bosley was shocked when she called detailing what had happened.

“It’s my oldest son and he is like mommy, Sam just gave birth in the car and I am like oh my gosh,” said Elisa Bosley.

Gilbert Solis missed his daughter’s birth because he was deployed over seas. He was grateful to be able to be there for his son’s birth.

“It was a powerful moment,” said Gilbert Solis.

Xavier Bosley said based on his birth, he believes his new nephew Adrian is going to do big things.

“He was like, ‘Surprise, I am going to do whatever I want and I am going to accomplish it somehow,” said Xavier.

Elisa Bosley’s daughter is expecting a child in a few months. The family hopes the next birth isn’t as dramatic.
