Harrowing the Hill
The Pikes Peak Hill Climb is a harrowing journey, one even legends can’t avoid,
“My very first time competing on the hill in 1981, first day of practice for me, I rolled off the edge into a cloud bank. I think I got an early appreciation of ‘this mountain can bite and it can hurt'” says Rod Millen, a Hall of Fame inductee.
More recently, Paul Dallenbach set the open wheel record last year but not without a few moments of fear, “There’s a lot of moments where you scare yourself. The harder you push it, you definitely get yourself into some situations where you go ‘wow, that was pretty scary.'”
Even the names of the turns on the course inspire terror, “You have turns that are named ‘bottomless pit’ right” says Blake Fuller, founder of Go Puck.
When it’s time to put the pedal to the metal caution is thrown to the wind, “You usually wait until race day to make those “oh crap” moments. ha ha”, says Dallenbach.
