People prepare for active killer situations

The Planned Parenthood shooting is one example of violence at a workplace that Pueblo law agencies and groups want to have people prepare for in the future, just in case.

The group had an active killer seminar Wednesday to make people aware that acts of violence can happen anywhere and at anytime.

The groups showed a dramatization video of a shooting happening in an office and what people did during the situation. There were participants at the seminar who wanted to know how to survive when a killer enters a workplace.

Christopher Duff, who works for Catholic Charities, was at the training. He said he was there to learn and teach his employees how to get ready for a worst case scenario.

“It’s frightening. We need to at least look at what are the signs and it does raise awareness,” he said.

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office was part of the training. A captain with the office said examples of acts of workplace violence like the 1999 Columbine High School shooting where 13 people died and the 2015 Planned Parenthood shooting where three people died are examples of why the training is important.

“I think the distraught people just want to take it out on somebody and if we can keep people aware and keep people safe, that’s what our goal is,” organizer Toni Gonzales said.

One of the instructors said the best pieces of advice he can give to people are to escape the building if there is an active killer, hide, or in a worst case scenario, fight.

Awareness and training that Duff said is valuable, but hopes to never use.

More than 40 people were at the training.
