Medal of Honor recipient honored

Mike Thornton earned the Medal of Honor by saving two fellow soldiers when they were under attack in a firefight in Vietnam.

“I don’t think I deserve the medal, never will think I deserve the medal, but the great thing is not what I did, is getting all my troops out alive,” Thornton said.

He was honored Saturday when his portrait was revealed at Pueblo’s Center For American Values.

Thornton’s portrait is being added to the 150 other Medal of Honor recipients.

“Every one of us are trying to make our country a better country for our children and our grandchildren,” Thornton said.

Fellow Medal of Honor recipient and Pueblo native Drew Dix is helping these heroes be remembered and celebrated.

“The community is starting to embrace the idea. It’s really bringing people here,” Dix said.

The men accept the award humbly and continue to honor the country.

“All these people on these walls and all the other men and woman who have served our greatest nation have given the utmost,” Thornton said.

The center is honoring one recipient per month until it host the Medal of Honor Society in September 2017.
