Embattled former sheriff discusses prisons chief murder with Denver Post
Former El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa discussed the 2013 murder of former Department of Corrections Executive Director Tom Clements in an interview with the Denver Post.
In an article posted online Wednesday, Maketa and former sheriff’s inspector John San Agustin told The Post they feel more people should have been charged in the case.
Stevie Vigil is the only person who has faced charges. She was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to buying the gun that was used to kill Clements.
Prosecutors say parolee Evan Ebel also used the gun to kill a second man and wound a sheriff’s deputy in Texas, where Ebel fled after killing Clements at his home in northern El Paso County. Ebel was killed in a shootout with Texas authorities.
Maketa and San Agustin told The Post they believe charges should have been filed against several people who they call conspirators in the killing.
Maketa left office amid scandal. You can read more about that here.
